Thousands of child protection concerns made to NSPCC during Christmas period
The NSPCC helpline received over 5,000 contacts last December about child abuse and neglect, with 17% leading to referrals to authorities or emergency services.
- NSPCC Helpline recorded nearly 5,400 contacts earlier this year, with around three quarters relating to emotional, physical, sexual abuse, and neglect.
- `I’m scared of visiting my mum on Christmas`, a 13-year-old told Childline, as the NSPCC highlights holiday dangers for children.
- Childline delivered more than 2,700 counselling sessions about abuse during winter months, and across the 12 Days of Christmas—December 24 to January 4—there were almost 2,000 child welfare contacts.
- Behind every contact an adult spoke up, often prompting vital interventions, and Childline is available 24/7 on 0800 1111 or via the 121 chat service.
- The campaign advert is inspired by a woman's true story of abuse by her father, using lived experience to spotlight holiday harms.
