Thomas Edison and Henry Ford worked side by side in Florida, leaving a legacy still seen today
The estates preserve Edison, Ford and Firestone’s collaboration, with homes, a laboratory and inventions still open to visitors, officials said.
As America celebrates the America 250 anniversary, the Edison and Ford Winter Estates on McGregor Boulevard draw visitors to explore the shared history of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford.
Fort Myers was a dusty cattle town of less than 350 people when Edison bought 13 acres for a winter home, soon joined by Ford.
Matt Andres, the curator, explained that "great ideas do not happen in isolation," describing the collaboration between Edison, Ford, Harvey Firestone, and John Burroughs.
A nonprofit preserves the homes, laboratory, and inventions, which remain open for visitors to learn about the "Uncommon Friends" who shaped modern America.
Mike Cosden, the estates' vice president, noted that the "lone inventor" myth ignores how relationships and teamwork actually drove the innovations that changed America.
