This Minnesota hiker went missing 21 years ago. What likely happened to him is a cautionary tale
Searchers found his clothing 4.5 miles in, and officials say cold, wet weather likely led to his death.
Nearly 21 years ago, Lloyd Harold Skelton set out alone on the 13.2-mile Angleworm Lake Trail in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness near Ely, Minnesota, in June 2005 and never returned.
Articles of his clothing were found by search parties about 4.5 miles in between Angleworm and Whisky Jack lakes, indicating hypothermia likely played a role in Skelton's case.
U.S. Forest Service crews found Skelton's blue 2000 Plymouth Sport van at the Angleworm Trail parking lot on June 17, about 10 miles northwest of Ely, still loaded with camping equipment.
A memorial service was held July 1 in honor of Skelton, who is believed to have died due to hypothermia in the Boundary Waters. The Louis County Sheriff maintains his case as an active, confidential investigation.
The Rescue Squad stated in a March 2025 Facebook post that they 'dust off' cold case files and keep a 'sharp lookout' to bring missing loved ones home to their families.
