Uruapan Welfare Secretary Arrested in Carlos Manzo Killing Probe
Authorities say the arrest is part of a broader probe that has led to 34 detentions and points to a complex conspiracy around the mayor’s killing.
On Thursday, Mexican authorities arrested Uruapan's Welfare Secretary Rosa Alejandra Vargas for "her probable responsibility in the crime of concealment" related to Mayor Carlos Manzo's November 2025 assassination.
Assassins killed Manzo last November during Day of the Dead celebrations, transforming the anti-cartel crusader into a martyr for his grassroots Sombrero Movement in the city 250 miles west of Mexico City.
Prosecutors have arrested 34 individuals in the case, including Vargas, who is reportedly related to two members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel implicated in the assassination plot.
Uruapan has experienced a surge of violence, with authorities documenting 17 killings throughout October. On Tuesday, the government deployed 200 law enforcement officers to boost security amid rising extortion.
Mayor Grecia Quiroz faces ongoing friction with Manzo's family over the investigation. Juan Manzo accused her of lacking transparency, while Quiroz denied the claims, asserting her family was "betrayed" by those closest to them.
