Image: First Glimpse of Comet 3I/ATLAS From Juice Science Camera
JUICE's JANUS camera captured over 120 images revealing the comet's coma, tail, and complex structures using multiple instruments to study its composition and particles.
- On February 27, 2026, the JANUS science camera captured the first image showing interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS spewing dust and gas, with ESA noting its tiny nucleus is not visible but surrounded by a bright coma.
- Throughout November, Juice spacecraft used five science instruments—JANUS, MAJIS, SWI, PEP, and UVS—to observe 3I/ATLAS, with instrument teams receiving data only last week and now analysing it.
- JANUS science camera recorded more than 120 images of 3I/ATLAS, including a processed inset highlighting the coma, while Juice was roughly 66 million km away using its main high-gain antenna as a heat shield and medium-gain antenna to send data.
- Instrument teams, together with the ESA navigation camera team, will meet in late March to compare findings, while ESA published updates and FAQs at esa.int/3IATLAS.
- On 6 November 2025, JANUS captured the comet seven days after perihelion, and months later Juice was on the opposite side of the Sun to Earth with image arrows showing comet motion and solar direction.

3I/ATLAS Latest Update: ESA Scientists Probe Interstellar Comet For Clues To Alien Star Systems
European scientists have revealed that the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS was captured in unprecedented detail by the European Space Agency's JUICE spacecraft on 6 November 2025, when the mission was en route through the outer Solar System and the object was moving away from the Sun after its closest pass. For context, 3I/ATLAS is only the third known interstellar comet ever confirmed, first spotted in June 2025 in data from the Asteroid Terrestria…
Anti-Sun Jets in ESA’s JANUS Image of 3I/ATLAS from November 6, 2025
The European Space Agency (ESA) just released here a new image of the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, obtained by the JANUS camera onboard the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice) spacecraft. JANUS is a multicolor optical camera designed to take high-resolution photos of Jupiter and its icy moons. The…
