Based on Black Book data from April 2026, the Mazda CX-5 tops the "best choices" list at $13,100, while the Mazda3 follows closely at $13,200.
Additional recommendations for budgets below $14,000 include the Mazda CX-3 and Subaru Crosstrek PHEV, while the Nissan Maxima is priced at $15,200.
The study advises parents to avoid minicars, vehicles with powerful engines, and large SUVs that are difficult to handle. All selected vehicles maintain a curb weight greater than 2,750 pounds.
