Rare Cosmic Coincidence Wednesday in DC Area
- On Jan. 3, 2026, the Wolf Moon will be full at 5:03 a.m. ET, marking the first of three supermoons this year, astronomy.com reports.
- Astronomers explain that a supermoon occurs when the Moon is near perigee, reached Jan. 1, making the full moon appear up to 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter, NASA said.
- This January Supermoon will reach its fullest point around 10 am on Saturday morning, and observers should look for it rising on the eastern horizon at moonrise and setting on the western horizon at moonset.
- The Quadrantids meteor shower will peak Jan. 3-4, and the supermoon's brightness will make all but the brightest meteors difficult to see, though it can produce up to 200 meteors per hour including bright fireballs.
- This event is part of a year that will have 13 full moons in 2026, with two full moons occurring in May, and Jupiter will be at its brightest this month.
