The White House is upgrading its front door to fortify the entrance
The upgrades are aimed at fortifying the White House entrance, while a separate proposal would replace temporary barricades around Lafayette Park with permanent fencing.
On Friday, the Trump administration submitted plans for permanent fencing around Lafayette Park and announced security-focused upgrades to the North Portico at the White House.
Security enhancements follow multiple assassination attempts targeting President Trump, including an incident at the White House Correspondents' Dinner at the Washington Hilton in April and an alleged plot at the White House South Lawn last month.
Unlike cosmetic projects, the North Portico work focuses on structural security; Interior Secretary Doug Burgum noted the stone restoration project is moving "quickly," with completion expected by mid-September.
The proposed Lafayette Park fencing would allow easier road closures during security threats, though the plan requires formal approval from the Commission of Fine Arts and multiple federal agencies.
Phased implementation of the security project could begin as soon as 2027, as officials have justified the President's sprawling ballroom project expected to include a secure underground bunker, drone port, and sniper nests.
