'A True Showstopper': Poll Reveals Britain's Favourite Butterfly
More than 20,000 people voted in the first national poll, and Butterfly Conservation said the result will help support butterfly monitoring.
- Butterfly Conservation revealed today that the Peacock butterfly won the first national vote for Britain's Favourite Butterfly, triumphing over 59 other species with more than 20,000 votes cast across the UK.
- Running from May 15 to June 7, the poll featured 60 butterfly species, where the Peacock's distinctive eye-spots and striking colours served as a defence mechanism helping it secure the coveted title.
- Completing the top five, the Orange-tip took second place, followed by the Red Admiral in third, the Holly Blue in fourth, and the bright yellow Brimstone rounding out the spots.
- Following the 2024 "butterfly emergency" declaration, Butterfly Conservation is calling on participants to join the upcoming Big Butterfly Count, which runs from July 17 to August 9 to track species health.
- Conservationists hope a surge in participation will improve data and galvanise habitat support; Kate Merry, head of engagement at Butterfly Conservation, added: "Taking part in the Big Butterfly Count couldn't be easier," requiring just 15 minutes of counting.
