At a panel discussion on earthquakes held in Kayseri, the city's past major tremors were brought up. Professor Dr. Hüsnü Serdar Akyüz stated that it is reported that between 5,000 and 8,000 people lost their lives in the 1717 earthquake, adding that it is unknown which fault caused the earthquake and how much of the energy in the faults was released.
