A new study suggests that the heat of our star caused a fairly thick layer of the nucleus of the famous comet to be ejected into space.

Comet 3I/Atlas arrived from another solar system, carrying material from an alien world. However, it turned out that this interstellar visitor left us with a surprise. Scientists have calculated how much material the comet lost during its encounter with our Sun. The most elaborate scenarios suggest billions of kilograms.

Layer by layer: The interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, according to a new model calculation, has lost a surface layer of 1.7 to 5.2 meters thick by evading gases alone. Taking dust into account, the removal could reach even deeper. Thus, ice might be accessible, which was less strongly changed during the long journey through the Milky Way.
