The head of the ultra-right party for freedom and direct democracy (SPD), Tomio Okamura, has been elected chairman of the Czech House of Representatives.
Because of his extreme views, the leader of the right-wing party SPD does not become minister in the future government of Andrej Babis. Instead, he now holds the third highest office in the state.
The emerging government coalition will face its first loyalty test on Wednesday. According to the agreement, 108 ANO, SPD and Motorists MPs are to elect SPD leader Tomi Okamura as Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies in a secret ballot. But for many of them it will be a really tough internal battle - Okamura is toxic even for some MPs of the upcoming government. Twenty years ago, they probably would not have solved such a dilemma.
The republic is currently governed by a government in resignation and the Chamber of Deputies is headed by a new speaker with a strong mandate from a confident three-way coalition. The 45th week of the year, during which the rotation of the highest political positions began in the Czech Republic, is coming to an end.
