- On October 29, 2026, an Italian Army CH-47 Chinook crashed near the Gorice area in northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina during routine training for the European Union's EUFOR Althea mission, killing four personnel and injuring 11 others.
- Defense Minister Guido Crosetto identified the victims as Sergeant Simone Ruggia and Sergeant Claudio Marchesi of Italian Army Aviation, and Lieutenant Franco Adriano Zecchillo and Sergeant Laura Procacci of the Red Cross Military Volunteer Corps.
- EUFOR stated the crash occurred in the Gorice area approximately 112 miles from Sarajevo; investigators have begun reconstructing the accident, which Italy's ambassador noted appeared to happen during takeoff.
- "There are no words capable of filling such a great loss," Defense Minister Crosetto said, while President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni conveyed condolences to the families of the fallen.
- The Italian Army has operated ICH-47F Chinooks since 2014, replacing older CH-47 models in service since 1973, while the EUFOR Althea mission maintains about 1,200 personnel under Italian command since January 2026.
