Ram Temple Row: SIT Set up to Probe Alleged Embezzlement of Donations, U.P. Government Tells Supreme Court
The Supreme Court asked the state to add a forensic auditor and file the team’s first status report within two weeks.
- On Monday, the Uttar Pradesh Government informed the Supreme Court that it formed a four-member Special Investigation Team headed by IGP Kiran to probe alleged embezzlement of donations at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
- Earlier, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta explained that the initial SIT was constituted only to conduct a preliminary inquiry with a limited mandate to determine if a cognizable offence occurred, prompting the Court to order a new comprehensive investigation.
- Calling for an impartial and above board probe, the Supreme Court directed the Uttar Pradesh Government to include a forensic auditor as the fifth member of the SIT, which will submit its first status report within two weeks.
- As the probe widens, authorities have detained eight individuals with 30 others under investigation, while the SIT has secured full access to the Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust's financial records for its review.
- CJI Surya Kant emphasized the Court is focused on having a "fair, speedy, impartial investigation," while Senior Advocate Devdatt Kamat warned that "remedial actions will be required" to ensure donations from across the country reached the Trust.
