The rise of agent-to-agent commerce: When AI starts shopping for AI

Merchants are preparing cleaner product data and checkout systems as AI agents move from product research to completing purchases, researchers and consultants said.

  • Online shopping is shifting from direct human interaction to agentic commerce, where digital proxies navigate marketplaces on behalf of human shoppers. McKinsey partner Becca Coggins calls this a fundamental reconfiguration of the customer journey.
  • As agents take over the purchase process, the future of shopping may be less about "clicking" and more about "delegating." Deloitte uses "workflow autonomy" to describe how much of a purchase software handles end-to-end.
  • Clean, structured product data is essential for agent-ready commerce, as PwC reports that agents cannot confirm products fit requests if size or compatibility details are missing. This requirement is what PwC calls being "transactable."
  • Trust remains the primary hurdle for autonomous shopping, particularly regarding financial authorization. Bob Hedges, fellow at MIT's Initiative on the Digital Economy, notes that formal fraud-liability rules exist, but applying them to AI agents remains under negotiation.
  • Columbia Business School researchers studied AI agents selecting products without human input, while Bain describes this progression as AI moving from information gathering to acting like a copilot. These developments position software as retailers' direct point of contact.
