The Queen of Denmark Debuts an Antique Sapphire Tiara in Copenhagen
The reworked antique jewel can now be worn as a tiara, necklace or brooch, continuing a century of royal redesigns.
- On Monday, Queen Mary debuted the redesigned Queen Alexandrine's sapphire tiara at a state banquet at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen, honoring the visiting Vietnamese President.
- Originally a wedding gift to Alexandrine in 1898 from Russian imperial relatives, the jewel was auctioned in 2018 for about $290,000 before the Royal Collection reacquired it in 2024.
- Mary collaborated with designers Diana Holstein and Hanan Emquies to create a fully reversible piece functioning as tiara, necklace, or brooch, pairing it with a midnight blue gown by Jesper Hovring.
- Monday's banquet concluded the first day of a three-day state visit by Vietnam's President, featuring Crown Prince Christian's state banquet debut alongside King Frederik and the Queen.
- Adapting crown jewels for modern use continues a royal tradition; on Tuesday, Mary and the First Lady will visit Copenhagen Contemporary and dine at a greenhouse restaurant.
