The Old Vine Registry, the World’s Largest and Most Authoritative Public Database of Old Vineyards, Launches the OVR Seal
The seal requires at least 85% of grapes from registered vineyards and will first appear on wines from 10 producers in seven countries.
- On Thursday, the Old Vine Registry launched the OVR Seal, a program allowing producers to certify that a wine's grapes come from documented vineyards aged more than 35 years.
- To qualify for the OVR Seal, at least 85% of a wine's grapes must originate from vineyards registered in the Old Vine Registry, which tracks more than 12,500 sites across 43 countries.
- Ten producers across seven countries, including Seghesio Family Vineyards, are among the first to adopt the seal, which requires a one-time $300 registration fee designed for small producers.
- Andy Robinson, Winemaker for Seghesio Family Vineyards, said the seal helps consumers understand the value of old-vine wines, noting that preserving 131-year-old vines is vital for sharing their history.
- Initiated by Jancis Robinson in 2010, the Registry clarifies that the OVR Seal confirms vineyard age rather than certifying wine quality, sustainability, or farming practices; labels will appear on upcoming vintages.
