Iran Responsible for Antisemitic Terror Attacks in Liège, Antwerp Earlier This Year
Security chief Gert Vercauteren said the attacks were part of a coordinated campaign, not isolated vandalism, after arrests disrupted the network.
Iran directly ordered two terrorist attacks against Jewish sites in Belgium earlier this year, according to Director Gert Vercauteren of the Belgian Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis .
The operations included a March 9 synagogue explosion in Liège and vehicle arson in Antwerp, with no injuries reported in either incident.
Vercauteren told RTBF on Thursday that perpetrators "certainly" acted on instructions from Tehran, while Belgian intelligence also identified cross-border plots including a disrupted plan to bomb a synagogue in Heemstede.
Following a suspect's detention in Turkey that disrupted a key network node, Belgian authorities have recorded no subsequent attacks since the arrest, though the national terror threat level remains "serious."
Vercauteren emphasized that extremism remains a "societal problem" that security services alone cannot solve, stressing that prevention and reintegration must be linked to combat the evolving threat.
