Peru rehearses its response to a magnitude 8.8 quake off Lima and Callao
Peru held the year's second national multi-hazard drill on Friday, an exercise testing evacuation protocols and the response capacity of the public and the authorities to a possible magnitude 8.8 earthquake centered off the central coast of Lima and Callao.
An area of approximately 400 kilometres off the central coast of Peru concentrates efforts and tectonic deformation that, according to studies by the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP), could generate an earthquake of magnitude 8.8, a scenario used by the authorities to prepare the population in the face of a high intensity earthquake.
The president presented the simulated figures of the II Multi-hazard Simulation, which projected thousands of victims and millions of people affected in case of a mega-seism off the central coast.
So far this year, the Piura region records 37 earthquakes. COER called for strengthening prevention and preparedness
