‘The Library Loads 30x Faster’ – The New Epic Games Launcher Has Arrived and Its Creators Say Its Speedier Than Steam
The preview build is 46% faster than Steam on cold start and adds Linux support, Epic said.
On Wednesday, Epic Games released a preview of its new Epic Games Launcher, built using AI and "vibe coding," with the library loading 30 times faster than its predecessor.
Epic CEO Tim Sweeney announced Monday a "huge pivot underway" to retool for maximum AI acceleration, aiming to "enable everyone here to build MORE and BETTER stuff" for teams using Unreal Engine.
Martin Keely, Epic Games Store VP and GM, explained the launcher was "rebuilt entirely from the ground up" using AI to improve efficiency, while introducing Linux support for the first time.
Epic claims the launcher boots 46% faster than Steam and restores from system tray 14% faster, though the company admits the preview is "light on features," describing it as a "speedboat and not a yacht."
Industry observers note "vibe coding" involves using AI to write code without full oversight, while Epic continues challenging Valve's Steam dominance despite skepticism about the company's reliance on AI-assisted development.
