A crowd of aviation enthusiasts gathered in Flintshire, North Wales, to bid farewell to the iconic super jumbo as it entered its well-deserved retirement. Airbus built just five of the transport aircraft, and now Beluga number 5 has made its final flight.
The Beluga ST 5 made its last voyage on Thursday 29 January. The plane, which looks very similar to the eponymous marine animal, landed definitively after twenty-five years of good and loyal services. It served for freight, so that individuals could not travel on board. On the other hand, its overflights were scrutinized closely and caused the wonder of the young and the great.
Assigned to the transport of large parts for the European aircraft manufacturer, the five A300-600 STs in the shape of whales are reverenced. They are replaced by a new generation XL, which entered service in 2020, to accompany the growing production of the A350.
The BelugaST 5 is the first aircraft in the fleet to be retired, with the remaining aircraft scheduled for retirement in 2027.
