Russian Escort Accused of Killing Senior Russian Navy Officer in Sevastopol
Russian authorities say the suspect confessed after a bin-hidden bomb killed a former Ukrainian naval officer accused of defecting to Russia.
On August 13, an explosive device on Stoletova Avenue in Sevastopol killed 49-year-old Robert Shageev, a former Ukrainian Navy officer. Russian authorities detained 32-year-old Margarita Reut, accusing her of planting the device.
Shageev previously commanded the Ukrainian submarine "Zaporizhzhia" before deserting to the Russian Navy in 2014 during Russia's invasion of Crimea. Ukraine had wanted him on suspicion of high treason for that defection.
Reut, who reportedly worked as an escort and biologist, faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted on the terrorism charge. Last year, she was fined approximately $365 for "discrediting the Russian army."
Russian sources alleged Reut acted on instructions from Ukrainian intelligence, though circumstances of any contact remain unclear. Ukraine has not commented on the attack, and no party has claimed responsibility.
Targeted killings and sabotage have recurred throughout occupied Crimea and Russia during the war, with collaborators and defectors frequently killed in bombings that often lack definitive attribution. The incident fits this broader pattern of unresolved attacks.
