Glasgow Nurse Helps Save Teen's Life 33 Years After Caring for His Mum Too

- More than 30 years apart, Stephanie Muirhead and her 14-year-old son Andrew were both cared for by nurse Angela Howat at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde hospitals.
- After persistent symptoms, Andrew's GP referred him to RHC where an MRI found a mass and doctors advised urgent surgery; surgeons removed most of the tumour and planned chemotherapy and proton therapy.
- Stephenia said, `When they started using dye for the scan, I knew something was wrong`, and Andrew needed physiotherapy, a wheelchair during chemotherapy, and help with eating due to weight loss.
- Angela Howat joined Andrew Muirhead as he rang the cancer bell at the end of treatment, and he was told he is currently cancer-free with ongoing surveillance through regular scans.
- RHC was recently recognised as a Tessa Jowell Centre for Excellence, and neurosurgeon Roddy O’Kane said: "Children’s cancer care is truly multi-disciplinary, involving nurses, surgeons, oncologists, dietitians, physiotherapists, play specialists, teachers and volunteers.
