3I/ATLAS Is Very Actively Releasing Water
3I/ATLAS, our third discovered interstellar visitor, has been in the news a lot lately for a whole host of reasons, and rightly so given the amount of unique scientific data different groups and telescopes have been collecting off of it. A new pre-release paper from researchers at the Auburn University Department of Physics recounts yet another interesting aspect of the new visitor - its water content.
A visitor to another star system surprised astronomers from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration of the United States (NASA).The Hubble space telescope obtained the sharpest image of comet 3I/ATLAS, just the third interstellar object detected so far and that travels the space at record speed.3I/ATLAS: a recent finding from the Hubble telescope in ChileThe 3I/ATLAS was first detected on July 1, 2025 by the telescope of the asteroid d…

A rare comet is approaching our solar system – but it is passing at a safe distance. In September, it may become visible to amateur telescopes. The comet was discovered on July 1 of this year by the Atlas telescope in Chile and was named 3I/Atlas. It is the third interstellar object ever observed passing through our solar system – hence the number three in the name. The two previous objects are 1I/’Oumuamua, discovered in 2017, and 2I/Borisov, d…
In the summer of 2025, an object older than the Sun appeared in the Solar System. Comet 3I/ATLAS, discovered on July 1 by the ATLAS telescope in Chile, is only the third confirmed visitor from interstellar space. Estimates suggest it may have formed over 7 billion years ago in a distant corner of the Milky Way, and now – after billions of years of travel – it is passing through our cosmic “home,” leaving behind more questions than answers.
