Yemen's Houthis Say They Launched an Attack on Saudi Ras Tanura Oil Refinery
Saudi authorities said the blaze near the kingdom’s biggest oil export terminal was quickly contained after missiles were intercepted.
On Tuesday, Iran-aligned Houthis claimed responsibility for a missile attack on Saudi Arabia's Ras Tanura oil refinery, with Saudi authorities containing a fire near the facility during the incident.
Houthis have escalated attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure since September, intensifying a conflict with a Saudi-led coalition that has persisted since 2015.
Saudi air defenses intercepted three ballistic missiles targeting the kingdom's eastern region, protecting Ras Tanura. The facility houses the country's largest refinery and storage tanks crucial for global markets.
Indian energy circles are monitoring the situation closely, as Saudi Arabia is a top crude supplier; however, Saudi authorities have not confirmed refinery damage from the incident.
Nearly all Saudi Arabia's oil exports flow through Ras Tanura and Yanbu, making them vulnerable targets. A 2019 attack on Aramco's facilities knocked out more than 5 per cent of global oil supply.
The attacks on Saudi Arabia's energy infrastructure continue. Now the Huthi militia is calling for an attack on a strategically important refinery. While reports point to fires, the Kingdom is also reporting the defense of further missiles.
