Tanzania announces first gas discovery in more than 10 years
The find at the Kasa-1X ST2 well is expected to boost supply by 30 million cubic feet a day and support new LNG projects.
On Tuesday, Energy Minister Juma Zuberi Homera announced a major discovery of 223 billion cubic feet of natural gas at the Kasa-1X ST2 well in Tanzania's Mnazi Bay area.
Jointly explored by the state-owned Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation and French oil company Maurel & Prom, the find represents Tanzania's first natural gas discovery in more than 10 years.
The Kasa-1X ST2 well is expected to produce about 30 million cubic feet of natural gas daily for at least 10 years, while MB-5 and MS-2 wells increased output by more than 65 million cubic feet daily.
Local businesses have secured 35 contracts worth more than Sh20 billion, with Tanzanians accounting for 95 percent of employees involved in gas production and processing.
TPDC is currently negotiating with four investors to develop small-scale liquefied natural gas projects, which Homera said will expand gas use in vehicles and support industrial growth.
