The visa system in the European Schengen area has a whole race of obstacles for human rights defenders from different regions of the world, preventing many of them from participating in major decision-making forums, particularly in Belgium. These obstacles are contrary to the rights and values that the Schengen States claim to defend, Amnesty International wrote in a new report published on 30 October 2025.
