On 18 October 2023 the European Central Bank (ECB) launched a two-year preparatory phase to test, define and experiment with a digital euro.This currency, which is complementary to cash in electronic format, could be deployed from 2027 or 2028, but provided that a European legislative framework is first adopted. Meanwhile, the debate is intensifying, fuelled by fantasies, virulent oppositions, but also by genuine sovereignty stakes for Europe.
