The “glorification” of the former military leader of the Bosnian Serbs Ratko Mladic, who died on 27 August in his prison in The Hague, is a “crime” within the meaning of the law in Bosnia, the Council of Europe recalled on Friday 4 September. In addition to the rallies organized in his honor, his remains were repatriated to Belgrade on Thursday, September 3, with military honors, before a funeral scheduled for September 7.
The body of the former soldier, nicknamed "the Balkan Boucher" and condemned in particular for the genocide of Srebrenica in 1995, was welcomed Thursday in Serbia with military honours.
The backlash came after memorial services for the former Bosnian Serb military leader who died in The Hague prison.
The body of the Bosnian Serb military commander was received with military honors in Belgrade.
"I strongly condemn the public glorification of Ratko Mladić, the late war criminal convicted of genocide in Srebrenica and crimes against humanity, including statements by officials from Republika Srpska, an entity in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as from Serbia," said Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Michael O'Flaherty.
