BYD Debuts First Brazilian-Made Plug-in Hybrid Flex Car as Sales Surge
BYD said the model can run on electricity, gasoline or ethanol as it expands local production and targets more than 50% Brazilian parts by 2027.
- On Tuesday, Chinese automaker BYD launched its first Brazilian-made plug-in hybrid flex-fuel car, the Song Pro Super-Hibrido Flex Fuel, following a two-year investment of 100 million reais .
- BYD is investing 5.5 billion reais in the Camacari plant, shifting from semi-knocked-down assembly to local production to comply with Brazilian regulations and establish a regional export hub.
- July marked BYD's strongest month in Brazil, with total sales reaching 23,465 vehicles for a 9.1% market share, while the Song Pro features an electric-only range of 60 km to 120 km depending on the model.
- Senior Vice President Alexandre Baldy stated the car meets the company's goal of using more than 50% of local parts by January 2027, calling it "a highly symbolic project for BYD" co-developed by research teams in Brazil and China.
- The Song Pro Flex could eventually target other markets, including India, as adoption of ethanol fuels spreads beyond Brazil, Baldy said.
