Baby Shark Star to Make K-Pop Debut as Baby Shark Boy
Park Geonroung’s first single, WAVE, features Joohoney of Monsta X as Pinkfong tests a one-off move into the broader K-pop market.
The Pinkfong Company announced Monday that Park Geonroung, the child performer from the 2016 'Pinkfong Baby Shark Dance' video, will debut as Baby Shark Boy on August 20 with the single 'WAVE,' featuring Joohoney of Monsta X.
Park first appeared in the viral 2016 video that surpassed 17.2 billion views. The Pinkfong Company aims to diversify beyond children's content into the broader K-pop market with this artist project.
Geonroung co-wrote the lyrics for 'WAVE,' which interpolates the original 'Baby Shark' hook with a synth-pop beat. The company confirmed this is a one-off project rather than a typical K-pop idol debut.
Following the single's release, the company will unveil 'WAVE: A Boy's Record,' a behind-the-scenes documentary tracing years since Park's viral appearance. The project aims to present Geonroung's own story authentically.
Decisions on Geonroung's future activities will be made after the single's debut. 'I'm happy to start something new,' he said, expressing his desire to share his voice and continue showing how he grows as an artist.
Park Geonroung, a boy who appeared on Baby Shark, the most watched video of all time on YouTube, has turned 17 with the announcement that he will debut as a K-pop soloist with the song Wave on August 20.
