In January 1975, Mánudagsblaðið published a small story with the headline “First bank robbery in Iceland?” It described how unknown men had entered the branch of Útvegsbankinn in Kópavogur and made off with 20-30 thousand krónur in change. The newspaper had this from sources but could not confirm it at the bank. “If this is true, the first bank robbery in Iceland has been committed here,” the newspaper wrote. In 1975, over 30,000 krónur was stolen from the Útvegsbankinn in Kópavogur, which is about 182,000 krónur at today's prices. The case remained unsolved until this summer, when one of the thieves turned himself in to the police and reported what happened.
