THC ban will destroy Texas' hemp agriculture industry, farmers say
- Texas lawmakers sent Senate Bill 3 to Gov. Greg Abbott on Sunday to ban consumable hemp products containing any THC traces.
- The bill follows a push by Lt. Patrick and Sen. Perry to close a loophole that allowed THC in hemp derivatives without a defined threshold.
- Farmers like Ann Gauger of Caprock Family Farms and Kyle Bingham say hemp cultivation requires some THC traces and that the bill threatens their livelihoods.
- Gauger noted, "We would be felons if we planted that," and Bingham said, "We were left out of this conversation," highlighting legal risks and lack of input.
- The legislation could end much of Texas' hemp industry as it currently exists, forcing farmers to cease THC-related production and businesses to close.
