Thames Water faces bankruptcy after stalemate with regulator

Britain’s largest water company has warned ministers that raising bills by more than a third will not be enough for it to avoid bankruptcy as it engages in a “Mexican stand-off” with the water regulator. Talks between Thames Water and Ofwat have broken down after the regulator refused to budge on its ruling last month that capped the amount that bills could rise to pay for new infrastructure investments over the next five years.
