Thai family mourns teen girl found dead in suitcase as Australian arrested
Police say the suspect faces murder and indecent-act charges after CCTV and suitcase evidence linked him to the teen's death.
- On Friday, authorities arrested 46-year-old Australian Simon Carman at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport as he allegedly attempted to board a flight home following the death of 17-year-old Thai teenager Tunchanok Donhomla.
- Tunchanok's friends reported her missing at 5pm on Friday, prompting police to trace her final movements to an apartment building where CCTV footage from Thursday showed the pair entering room 20 on the 15th floor, but she never exited.
- Surveillance footage from Thursday at 9:34pm allegedly shows Carman leaving the hotel with a black suitcase, riding a motorcycle, and disappearing for nine minutes near railway tracks, where officers later discovered Tunchanok's body inside a 26-inch bag.
- Pattaya City Police Superintendent Colonel Anek Sarathongyu said Carman faces an initial charge of "taking a minor for the purpose of committing an indecent act," though Carman denies killing her, claiming she disappeared while he was asleep.
- Investigators, who noted defensive scratches on Carman's body, continue questioning him on suspicion of murder, which carries a potential penalty of 15 to 20 years or death in Thailand; the Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance.
