TRAVIS COUNTY, TEXAS, JUL 9 – Governor Abbott sets a special session to tackle flood relief, hemp THC regulation, and redistricting amid over 100 flood deaths and political pressure to strengthen GOP control.
- Abbott called a special legislative session set to begin July 21 at 12:00 PM in Austin to address flood response and 18 priority items.
- Amid catastrophic flooding, the National Weather Service issued its first warning at 1:14 a.m. Friday, about three hours before flooding reports along the Guadalupe River.
- Search and rescue teams have been looking for 161 missing people in Kerr County, with at least seven deaths across Travis, Kendall, Burnet, Williamson, and Tom Green counties.
- The session agenda includes legislation to bolster flood warning systems, emergency communications, relief funding, criminalize hemp-derived THC sales to under 21, and revisit congressional redistricting maps, Texas Legislature announced Wednesday.
- On July 23, the joint select committee will hear expert recommendations, with hearings expected to last months to develop flood systems `that work five, 10, 20, 50 years from now,` said Wes Birdwell.
