Massive Texas backlog of voter registrations that scrambled workers has been cleared, state says
Officials said counties cleared more than 500,000 delayed voter records and will count registrations submitted before the deadline.
On Thursday, Texas election officials announced they cleared a backlog of more than 500,000 voter registration records just days before early voting begins on Monday.
A software update error at the Texas Department of Public Safety caused the massive backlog, failing to transmit registration records to counties for processing.
Harris County processed over 75,000 records, which Voter Registrar Annette Ramirez called "a big win for our county," as election offices hired temporary workers to handle the surge.
The Texas Secretary of State's Office is offering grants to cover overtime costs, spokesperson Alicia Pierce said Wednesday, and voters missing from rolls can cast provisional ballots.
Voting rights groups sued the state, alleging the backlog breached a 2021 settlement agreement requiring reliable online voter registration through the Department of Public Safety portal.
