- Tesla launched a fresh six-seater Model Y L in India on Wednesday, expanding its limited product lineup following its market entry last July.
- Positioned between the existing rear-wheel-drive Model Y priced at roughly 6 million rupees and the 6.8 million rupee long-range variant, the new trim offers a mid-range option.
- Due to India's steep 100% import tariff, the vehicle costs 6.2 million rupees, placing the Model Y L in a niche segment well above the $22,000 price point for most cars sold in India.
- Tesla India Head Sharad Agarwal noted that lower running costs could help buyers recover about one-third of the purchase price over four to five years, offsetting the high sticker price for premium-seeking consumers.
- While the Model Y L has not yet been launched in the United States, Tesla introduced the version in China last year, where it starts at 339,000 yuan, signaling regional market prioritization.
