Maryland Fires Its Defensive Coordinator After a 5th Consecutive Loss
Maryland promoted Aazaar Abdul-Rahim after the defense allowed 219 points during a five-game slide, the school said.
On Sunday, University of Maryland head football coach Michael Locksley fired defensive coordinator Ted Monachino following the team's fifth consecutive loss. Locksley elevated co-defensive coordinator Aazaar Abdul-Rahim to primary defensive coordinator for the remainder of the season.
The dismissal follows a five-game losing skid where the Terrapins surrendered an average of 43.8 points to opponents. Maryland currently ranks last in the Big Ten in scoring defense, yielding 33.3 points per game through seven contests.
Systemic defensive failures include allowing touchdowns on 95.5 percent of opponent red-zone trips. Opponents also converted 41.9 percent of third downs and 63.6 percent of fourth downs against Monachino's unit, extending drives throughout the season.
"I appreciate Ted's hard work and dedication to our program during his time in College Park," Locksley said in a statement. Inside linebackers coach Zac Spavital will assume co-defensive coordinator duties to assist Abdul-Rahim.
Maryland enters a bye week with a 2-5 overall record before hosting Illinois on October 31 at SECU Stadium. The coaching transition must stabilize the defense to salvage the remaining games on the 2026 schedule.
