Tennis-World Number One Rybakina to Miss Billie Jean King Cup Finals After Demanding Month
On Friday, world number one Elena Rybakina announced she will miss the Billie Jean King Cup Finals for Kazakhstan, citing a physically demanding month. She confirmed the withdrawal on Instagram.
The Kazakh Tennis Federation confirmed Rybakina is sidelined by an achilles tendon injury sustained at the Cincinnati Open. She had retired from her quarterfinal match against Iga Swiatek at that tournament.
Despite the physical toll, Rybakina secured her third Grand Slam title at the US Open, where officials revealed she played through pain and used painkillers. An ankle injury had threatened her campaign before the tournament began.
Scheduled for September 22 to 27 in Shenzhen, China, the Billie Jean King Cup Finals will proceed without the world number one. Kazakhstan faces Spain in the quarter-finals on September 23.
Recovery will take at least two weeks, the federation stated. The eight-team event in Shenzhen also features defending champions Italy, alongside Belgium, Ukraine, Great Britain, Czechia, and China competing for the title.
Kazakese tennis player Elena Ripkina, the world's world-class winner of the Open America Championship, announced on Friday that she was not elected to her country at the Billy Jin King Cup finals scheduled to take place in China.
