Tennis-Injured Swiatek Goes Down Fighting in Wuhan Open Semi-Final
- On Saturday, Iga Swiatek's run at the Wuhan Open ended in a 7-5, 6-1 semi-final loss to Maja Chwalinska, as a left-thigh injury severely restricted the six-time Grand Slam winner's movement throughout the match.
- Leading 5-3, Swiatek faltered before calling for a medical timeout at 6-5, losing three consecutive games as her left-thigh injury worsened during the opening set.
- Returning with a bandaged left thigh, Swiatek struggled to put weight on her leg or retrieve shots, with Chwalinska's angles and variety exploiting the seventh seed's severely compromised mobility.
- Chwalinska closed out the match in two hours and eight minutes, later telling reporters, "She is a great champion, living legend, she won everything. So it was a great honour for me to share the court with her today."
- Sunday's final will feature Chwalinska against British player Sonay Kartal, marking both competitors' first WTA 1000 championship match after Kartal defeated Jelena Ostapenko 7-6, 7-6.
