Chattanooga Railway Conductor Fired After Viral July 4 Speech
CARTA said Jack Peterson was fired after a passenger complaint, while a GoFundMe for him raised $2,000 toward a $2,800 goal.
- On Saturday, the Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority fired Lookout Mountain Incline Railway conductor Jack Peterson immediately after his Independence Day speech to passengers was reported to management.
- Addressing passengers, Peterson remarked, "To the very, very few Americans in here, Happy Independence Day," then told others, "if you disagree, you can leave," prompting confused reactions and one passenger yelling "shut up."
- Nathan Scherer posted the clip to TikTok, labeling it "racist" and "xenophobic," while his father, Charles Scherer, reported Peterson's comments to CARTA management, saying Peterson "was the only one representing the company."
- CARTA Chief of Staff Scott Wilson apologized, stating the agency has "zero tolerance for language that demeans or excludes." Peterson defended his remarks, saying he did not intend them to be "racist" or "xenophobic."
- A GoFundMe set up for the Tennessee conductor has raised $2,000 of a $2,800 goal, while supporters on X claimed Peterson was "150% correct" despite widespread criticism of his speech.
