Tennessee, federal leaders green light Elon Musk's Music City Loop
The Music City Loop, fully funded by Elon Musk's The Boring Company, aims to cut downtown-to-airport travel to 8 minutes and reduce congestion without taxpayer costs.
- On Feb. 25, 2026, Gov. Bill Lee announced that the Tennessee Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration approved The Boring Company’s lease and grading permit for state-owned right-of-way in Nashville.
- Music City Loop will link downtown Nashville, lower Broadway and West End to Nashville International Airport in about eight minutes, with The Boring Company fully funding the 40-year, $34 million agreement secured earlier this month.
- Construction begins immediately as The Boring Company says the shovel-ready project’s first segment is expected operational by the end of this year and meets NFPA-130 safety standards.
- Officials say the project will be 100% privately funded with no cost to taxpayers, create job opportunities for Tennesseans, remove thousands of vehicles from surface roads, and open potential system expansion in Nashville and statewide.
- Opponents warned of unresolved safety, labor, environmental, and geological concerns as Metro Nashville officials said, `There was no response to this body until I filed legislation opposing this project`.
