Tencent mulls $5 billion bond sale to push AI ambitions, Bloomberg News reports
The Chinese technology giant is weighing dollar and offshore yuan debt as peers tap bond markets to fund AI infrastructure.
On Thursday, Tencent Holdings is considering raising up to $5 billion via an offshore bond sale, Bloomberg News reported, with bonds potentially issued in US dollars and offshore yuan as early as this month.
Tencent has ramped up AI-related spending to compete with rivals ByteDance and Alibaba Group Holding, raising capital expenditures by 176 per cent on AI projects and computing to 52.8 billion yuan in the June quarter.
This move follows Tencent's $4.66 billion bond offering in June, its largest debt deal since 2020, with proceeds directed toward general corporate purposes and AI development.
Global AI-related debt issuance has already topped US$575 billion in 2026 according to Goldman Sachs credit strategists, as SoftBank Group raised about $11.1 billion last month through a junk-bond offering for its AI ambitions.
Tencent aims to develop artificial intelligence models akin to DeepSeek or Moonshot AI, including the Hy4 for later in 2026, while operating one of the country's largest AWS-like cloud services for clients developing their own AI platforms.
