Ten killed in horror bus and taxi head-on collision in Mpumalanga
Authorities said misty conditions may have reduced visibility as police investigate whether reckless or negligent driving caused the crash.
On Thursday morning, a head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a bus on the R39 highway near Standerton, Mpumalanga, killed ten people; all deceased were occupants of the minibus taxi, including the driver.
The crash occurred about 5km outside Standerton just after 5 a.m. as the taxi traveled toward the town, where misty conditions likely reduced visibility and authorities suspect reckless driving contributed to the collision.
Eight passengers died at the scene, one passed away during transport, and another succumbed at Standerton Hospital, while Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison spokesperson Moeti Mmusi confirmed one person sustained serious injuries and two others escaped with minor injuries.
Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Jacie Macie sent condolences to the bereaved families as police investigations continue to determine the exact circumstances that led to the fatal collision.
Road safety authorities have sounded an urgent alarm as winter grips South Africa, warning that poor visibility and treacherous weather could create dangerous conditions; Road Traffic Management Corporation spokesperson Simon Zwane cited regional mist and black ice as compounding factors.
