Amber Heat Warning Expanded as Parts of England Face More Extreme Temperatures
Temperatures could reach 38C as officials warn of wildfire risks and health impacts during England’s fifth heatwave of the summer.
- On Thursday, the Met Office expanded its Amber Extreme Heat Warning across much of England, including North West England, the South West, and the Midlands, warning of "extreme heat" as temperatures threaten to reach 38C.
- This fifth heatwave of the summer places 2026 on track for a record hot year, exceeding the previous high set in 2025. The Met Office reports this is provisionally the ninth day this year with temperatures above 35C.
- Met Office forecaster Alex Burkill warned that infrastructure including railway lines is "not designed for this sort of heat." The Royal College and Nursing staff reported patients are being cared for in hospitals described as "not fit for humans."
- England and Wales have recorded 1,017 wildfires this year, as firefighters continue battling a New Forest blaze near the A31, which remains closed. Chiltern Railways and East Midlands Railway issued alerts to "only travel if essential."
- Prime Minister Andy Burnham chaired an emergency Cobra committee meeting on Wednesday in response to the prolonged dry spell. Baroness Brown of the Climate Change Committee warned the situation "gets worse from here" until greenhouse gas emissions are cut to net zero.
