Teens found guilty of killing Mikey Roynon have convictions quashed
Two teenagers had their manslaughter convictions quashed due to a critical jury misdirection error, while the murder conviction of a third remains upheld.
- On May 23 the Court of Appeal, London quashed Cartel Bushnell and Leo Knight's manslaughter convictions, a ruling delivered by Lady Chief Justice Baroness Carr, Mr Justice Bryan and Mr Justice Cavanagh after the May 15 hearing.
- Judges said an `accidental, but critical, error` occurred in jury directions, making the convictions unsafe, and barristers argued Mr Justice Saini `inadvertently misdirected the jury` on self‑defence.
- The Bath house party in June 2023 saw Mikey Roynon fatally stabbed in the neck, with a nearly 10in knife in a drain bearing his blood and a 7in knife with airborne blood traces recovered nearby.
- The CPS decided to `offer no evidence`, leading to Bushnell and Knight's release on Wednesday as reporting restrictions were lifted; by contrast, Shane Cunningham's appeal was dismissed and he remains detained.
- Hayley Ryall, Mikey's mother, said, `You go through a long trial which is horrendous, it's like a whirlwind and you think that's it`, reflecting on their ordeal and campaign work after the ruling.
