Woman, 19, Died After Taking Common Contraceptive Pill
The inquest found the contraceptive pill Femodette contributed to a rare brain clot causing death, highlighting concerns over blood pressure monitoring in young patients.
On Thursday , Bolton Coroner Peter Sigee concluded Áine Rose Hurst's death was caused by cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, with the combined pill identified as a contributing factor.
Emma Walker recorded a blood pressure of 140/93 on December 18, 2024, advising Áine to stop Femodette and see her GP; at a subsequent appointment, Dr Moyinoluwa Oluwaseyi Onayade noted 130/90 and discussed monitoring.
Following a night out on March 8, Áine complained of a worsening headache initially treated as a hangover before she collapsed, and doctors found a clot causing severe brain swelling.
Coroner Peter Sigee reflected that medications can have rare side effects, and Mr Sigee offered condolences noting Áine's family showed how much she was loved.
The family said they are deeply concerned the GP did not consider Áine Rose Hurst's high blood pressure and want changes to prevent repeats after she restarted the pill next month.
