Teenage recruits report rape and abuse at British Army training college

- Harrogate MP Tom Gordon wrote to Defence Secretary Wes Streeting demanding an independent inquiry into the college's culture and safeguarding practices. Gordon argued transparency is necessary to rebuild trust among parents of young recruits aged 16 and 17.
- The Army cited a January 2026 Ofsted visit that 'recognised the culture of care,' yet victim accounts challenge this assessment. Recent reforms include the independent Defence Serious Crime Command to support victims throughout the justice process.

Four former female recruits have alleged rape, sexual assault and harassment at the Army Foundation College in Harrogate. The claims and complaint figures have intensified scrutiny of the treatment of women in military training.
From January 2018 to June 2025, 176 complaints were recorded - A 19-year-old woman ended her life after being sexually assaulted by a former army sergeant, who was sentenced to only six months in prison.
Four British recruits report to the BBC on sexual abuse and misconduct during their training. One of them claims to have even been raped. It is not the first such accusations against the military school.
The girls say the incidents took place at Harrogate Military College when they were 17 years old.
