Teen Told Seizures Were ‘Anxiety’ Left Brain Damaged at Age 16
Her family says the rare heart-rhythm disorder left her with brain damage, and they are paying for therapy and home changes themselves.
Rubie Boyton, now 18, suffered permanent brain damage two years ago after a cardiac arrest in Ashford, Kent, following seizures doctors previously attributed to anxiety.
Tests later identified the cause as catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia , a rare heart disorder affecting one in 10,000 people, after a friend performed CPR in Bridgefield Park.
Two years later, Rubie remains unable to communicate or move and relies on blended foods, with mother Kim Tucker saying the NHS has provided minimal support.
To accommodate her needs, the family invested more than $65,000 in a home extension, aided by a nearly $40,000 disabled facilities grant, while parents Kim and Simon quit their jobs.
